ॐ अस्य आदित्यहृदय स्तोत्रस्य अगस्त्यऋषिः अनुष्टुप्छन्दः आदित्यहृदयभूतो भगवान् ब्रह्मा देवता।
Oṃ asya Āditya-hṛdaya stotrasya Agastya-ṛṣiḥ anuṣṭup-chandaḥ Āditya-hṛdaya-bhūto Bhagavān Brahmā devatā
Om. Of this Aditya Hridaya stotram, the seer is Agastya, the metre is Anushtup, and the deity is the Lord Brahma who is the very heart of Aditya.
निरस्ताशेषविघ्नतया ब्रह्माविद्यासिद्धौ सर्वत्र जयसिद्धौ च विनियोगः॥
Nirastāśeṣa-vighnatayā brahmāvidyā-siddhau sarvatra jaya-siddhau ca viniyogaḥ
Its application is for the removal of every obstacle, for attainment of the knowledge of Brahman, and for the attainment of victory everywhere.
verse 1
ततो युद्धपरिश्रान्तं समरे चिन्तया स्थितम्।
Tato yuddha-pariśrāntaṃ samare cintayā sthitam
Then, seeing Rama worn out by the fighting and standing on the battlefield lost in thought,
रावणं चाग्रतो दृष्ट्वा युद्धाय समुपस्थितम्॥1॥
Rāvaṇaṃ cāgrato dṛṣṭvā yuddhāya samupasthitam
and seeing Ravana standing before him, ready for combat,
verse 2
दैवतैश्च समागम्य द्रष्टुमभ्यागतो रणम्।
Daivataiś-ca samāgamya draṣṭum-abhyāgato raṇam
having come together with the gods to witness the battle,
उपागम्याब्रवीद्राममगस्त्यो भगवान् ऋषिः॥2॥
Upāgamy-ābravīd-Rāmam-Agastyo bhagavān ṛṣiḥ
the venerable sage Agastya drew near and spoke to Rama.
verse 3
राम राम महाबाहो शृणु गुह्यं सनातनम्।
Rāma Rāma mahābāho śṛṇu guhyaṃ sanātanam
Rama, Rama, mighty-armed one, hear this eternal secret,
येन सर्वानरीन् वत्स समरे विजयिष्यसि॥3॥
Yena sarvān-arīn vatsa samare vijayiṣyasi
by which, dear child, you will conquer all your enemies in battle.
verse 4
आदित्यहृदयं पुण्यं सर्वशत्रुविनाशनम्।
Āditya-hṛdayaṃ puṇyaṃ sarva-śatru-vināśanam
The Aditya Hridaya is holy, the destroyer of every enemy,
जयावहं जपेन्नित्यम् अक्षय्यं परमं शिवम्॥4॥
Jayāvahaṃ japen-nityam akṣayyaṃ paramaṃ śivam
the bringer of victory; recite it daily. It is imperishable, supreme and auspicious.
verse 5
सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्यं सर्वपापप्रणाशनम्।
Sarva-maṅgala-māṅgalyaṃ sarva-pāpa-praṇāśanam
It is the most auspicious of all auspicious things, the destroyer of every sin,
चिन्ताशोकप्रशमनम् आयुर्वर्धनमुत्तमम्॥5॥
Cintā-śoka-praśamanam āyur-vardhanam-uttamam
it stills anxiety and grief, and is the finest lengthener of life.
verse 6
रश्मिमंतं समुद्यन्तं देवासुरनमस्कृतम्।
Raśmimantaṃ samudyantaṃ devāsura-namaskṛtam
Worship him who is crowned with rays, who rises up in the sky, to whom gods and demons alike bow,
पूजयस्व विवस्वन्तं भास्करं भुवनेश्वरम्॥6॥
Pūjayasva vivasvantaṃ bhāskaraṃ bhuvan-eśvaram
worship Vivasvan, the maker of light, the lord of all the worlds.
verse 7
सर्वदेवात्मको ह्येष तेजस्वी रश्मिभावनः।
Sarva-devātmako hyeṣa tejasvī raśmi-bhāvanaḥ
For he is the very self of all the gods, brilliant, the source from which the rays arise;
एष देवासुरगणाँल्लोकान् पाति गभस्तिभिः॥7॥
Eṣa devāsura-gaṇāṃl-lokān pāti gabhas-tibhiḥ
with his beams he protects the hosts of gods and demons and all the worlds.
verse 8
एष ब्रह्मा च विष्णुश्च शिवः स्कन्दः प्रजापतिः।
Eṣa Brahmā ca Viṣṇuś-ca Śivaḥ Skandaḥ Prajāpatiḥ
He is Brahma, and Vishnu, and Shiva, Skanda, Prajapati,
महेन्द्रो धनदः कालो यमः सोमो ह्यपां पतिः॥8॥
Mahendro dhanadaḥ kālo yamaḥ somo hyapāṃ patiḥ
great Indra, Kubera the giver of wealth, Time itself, Yama, Soma, and the lord of the waters.
verse 9
पितरो वसवः साध्या ह्यश्विनौ मरुतो मनुः।
Pitaro vasavaḥ sādhyā hyaśvinau maruto manuḥ
He is the ancestors, the Vasus, the Sadhyas, the two Ashvins, the Maruts, Manu,
वायुर्वह्निः प्रजाप्राण ऋतुकर्ता प्रभाकरः॥9॥
Vāyur-vahniḥ prajāprāṇa ṛtu-kartā prabhākaraḥ
the wind, the fire, the life-breath of all creatures, the maker of the seasons, the bringer of light.
verse 10
आदित्यः सविता सूर्यः खगः पूषा गभस्तिमान्।
Ādityaḥ savitā sūryaḥ khagaḥ pūṣā gabhas-timān
He is Aditya, Savita, Surya, Khaga the sky-traveller, Pushan the nourisher, Gabhastiman the rayed one,
सुवर्णसदृशो भानुर्हिरण्यरेता दिवाकरः॥10॥
Suvarṇa-sadṛśo bhānur-hiraṇya-retā divākaraḥ
Bhanu who shines like gold, Hiranyareta of the golden seed, Divakara the day-maker.
verse 11
हरिदश्वः सहस्रार्चिः सप्तसप्तिर्मरीचिमान्।
Harid-aśvaḥ sahasrārciḥ sapta-saptir-marīcimān
Haridashva of the tawny horses, Sahasrarchi of a thousand flames, Saptasapti drawn by seven steeds, Marichiman possessed of rays,
तिमिरोन्मथनः शम्भुस्त्वष्टा मार्ताण्ड अंशुमान्॥11॥
Timironmathanaḥ śambhus-tvaṣṭā mārtāṇḍa aṃśumān
Timironmathana the churner of darkness, Shambhu, Tvashta the shaper, Martanda, Amshuman the radiant.
verse 12
हिरण्यगर्भः शिशिरस्तपनो भास्करो रविः।
Hiraṇya-garbhaḥ śiśiras-tapano bhāskaro raviḥ
Hiranyagarbha the golden-wombed, Shishira the cooling one, Tapana the burning one, Bhaskara, Ravi,
अग्निगर्भोऽदितेः पुत्रः शङ्खः शिशिरनाशनः॥12॥
Agni-garbho'diteḥ putraḥ śaṅkhaḥ śiśira-nāśanaḥ
Agnigarbha the fire-wombed, the son of Aditi, Shankha, Shishiranashana the destroyer of cold.
verse 13
व्योमनाथस्तमोभेदी ऋग्यजुःसामपारगः।
Vyoma-nāthas-tamo-bhedī ṛg-yajuḥ-sāma-pāragaḥ
Lord of the sky, piercer of darkness, master of the Rig, Yajur and Sama Vedas,
घनवृष्टिरपां मित्रो विन्ध्यवीथीप्लवङ्गमः॥13॥
Ghana-vṛṣṭir-apāṃ mitro vindhya-vīthī-plavaṅgamaḥ
the heavy rain, the friend of the waters, who courses swiftly along the path above the Vindhyas.
verse 14
आतपी मण्डली मृत्युः पिङ्गलः सर्वतापनः।
Ātapī maṇḍalī mṛtyuḥ piṅgalaḥ sarva-tāpanaḥ
Atapi the scorcher, Mandali of the round disc, Mrityu who is death, Pingala the tawny one, Sarvatapana who heats all,
कविर्विश्वो महातेजाः रक्तः सर्वभवोद्भवः॥14॥
Kavir-viśvo mahātejāḥ raktaḥ sarva-bhavodbhavaḥ
Kavi the seer, Vishva the all, of vast splendour, red-hued, the origin of all that exists.
verse 15
नक्षत्रग्रहताराणां अधिपो विश्वभावनः।
Nakṣatra-graha-tārāṇāṃ adhipo viśva-bhāvanaḥ
Lord of the lunar mansions, the planets and the stars, the one who brings the universe into being,
तेजसामपि तेजस्वी द्वादशात्मन् नमोऽस्तु ते॥15॥
Tejasām-api tejasvī dvādaśātman namo'stu te
the radiance even of the radiant: O twelve-formed one, salutations to you.
verse 16
नमः पूर्वाय गिरये पश्चिमायाद्रये नमः।
Namaḥ pūrvāya giraye paścimāyādraye namaḥ
Salutations to the eastern mountain, salutations to the western mountain,
ज्योतिर्गणानां पतये दिनाधिपतये नमः॥16॥
Jyotir-gaṇānāṃ pataye dina-ādhipataye namaḥ
salutations to the lord of the hosts of light, to the ruler of the day.
verse 17
जयाय जयभद्राय हर्यश्वाय नमो नमः।
Jayāya jaya-bhadrāya haryaśvāya namo namaḥ
To Victory, to the auspiciousness of victory, to him of the tawny horses, salutations again and again;
नमो नमः सहस्रांशो आदित्याय नमो नमः॥17॥
Namo namaḥ sahasrāṃśo Ādityāya namo namaḥ
salutations, salutations, O thousand-rayed one; to Aditya, salutations again and again.
verse 18
नम उग्राय वीराय सारङ्गाय नमो नमः।
Nama ugrāya vīrāya sāraṅgāya namo namaḥ
Salutations to the fierce one, to the valiant one, to Saranga the swift-moving, salutations again and again;
नमः पद्मप्रबोधाय मार्ताण्डाय नमो नमः॥18॥
Namaḥ padma-prabodhāya mārtāṇḍāya namo namaḥ
salutations to the awakener of lotuses; to Martanda, salutations again and again.
verse 19
ब्रह्मेशानाच्युतेशाय सूर्यायादित्यवर्चसे।
Brahmeśānācyuteśāya sūryāyāditya-varcase
To the lord of Brahma, Ishana and Achyuta, to Surya of the splendour of Aditya,
भास्वते सर्वभक्षाय रौद्राय वपुषे नमः॥19॥
Bhāsvate sarva-bhakṣāya raudrāya vapuṣe namaḥ
to the shining one, to the devourer of all, to the fierce form, salutations.
verse 20
तमोघ्नाय हिमघ्नाय शत्रुघ्नायामितात्मने।
Tamoghnāya himaghnāya śatrughnāyāmitātmane
To the slayer of darkness, the slayer of cold, the slayer of enemies, whose self is measureless,
कृतघ्नघ्नाय देवाय ज्योतिषां पतये नमः॥20॥
Kṛtaghna-ghnāya devāya jyotiṣāṃ pataye namaḥ
to the destroyer of the ungrateful, to the god, to the lord of all lights, salutations.
verse 21
तप्तचामीकराभाय वह्नये विश्वकर्मणे।
Tapta-cāmīkarābhāya vahnaye viśva-karmaṇe
To him of the hue of molten gold, to the fire, to the maker of the universe,
नमस्तमोऽभिनिघ्नाय रुचये लोकसाक्षिणे॥21॥
Namas-tamo'bhinighnāya rucaye loka-sākṣiṇe
salutations to the utter destroyer of darkness, to radiance itself, to the witness of all the worlds.
verse 22
नाशयत्येष वै भूतं तदेव सृजति प्रभुः।
Nāśayatyeṣa vai bhūtaṃ tadeva sṛjati prabhuḥ
This lord destroys all that exists, and it is he who creates it again;
पायत्येष तपत्येष वर्षत्येष गभस्तिभिः॥22॥
Pāyatyeṣa tapatyeṣa varṣatyeṣa gabhas-tibhiḥ
he draws up the waters, he burns, and with his rays he pours down the rain.
verse 23
एष सुप्तेषु जागर्ति भूतेषु परिनिष्ठितः।
Eṣa supteṣu jāgarti bhūteṣu pariniṣṭhitaḥ
He keeps watch while all creatures sleep, established within them;
एष एवाग्निहोत्रं च फलं चैवाग्निहोत्रिणाम्॥23॥
Eṣa evāgni-hotraṃ ca phalaṃ caivāgni-hotriṇām
he alone is the agnihotra offering, and the fruit that comes to those who perform it.
verse 24
वेदाश्च क्रतवश्चैव क्रतूनां फलमेव च।
Vedāś-ca kratavaś-caiva kratūnāṃ phalam-eva ca
He is the Vedas, and the sacrifices, and the very fruit of the sacrifices;
यानि कृत्यानि लोकेषु सर्व एष रविः प्रभुः॥24॥
Yāni kṛtyāni lokeṣu sarva eṣa raviḥ prabhuḥ
of whatever deeds are done in all the worlds, this Ravi is the lord.
verse 25
एनमापत्सु कृच्छ्रेषु कान्तातेषु भयेषु च।
Enam-āpatsu kṛcchreṣu kāntāteṣu bhayeṣu ca
In misfortunes, in hardships, in trackless wilds, and in times of fear,
कीर्तयन् पुरुषः कश्चिन्नावसीदति राघव॥25॥
Kīrtayan puruṣaḥ kaścin-nāvasīdati Rāghava
no one who praises him ever comes to ruin, O Raghava.
verse 26
पूजयस्वैनमेकाग्रो देवदेवं जगत्पतिम्।
Pūjayasvaim-ekāgro deva-devaṃ jagat-patim
Worship him with a one-pointed mind, the god of gods, the lord of the world;
एतत् त्रिगुणितं जप्त्वा युद्धेषु विजयिष्यसि॥26॥
Etat tri-guṇitaṃ japtvā yuddheṣu vijayiṣyasi
recite this three times over and you will be victorious in battle.
verse 27
अस्मिन् क्षणे महाबाहो रावणं त्वं वधिष्यसि।
Asmin kṣaṇe mahābāho Rāvaṇaṃ tvaṃ vadhiṣyasi
In this very moment, mighty-armed one, you shall slay Ravana.
एवमुक्त्वा तदागस्त्यो जगाम च यथागतम्॥27॥
Evam-uktvā tadā Agastyo jagāma ca yathāgatam
Having spoken thus, Agastya then departed as he had come.
verse 28
एतच्छ्रुत्वा महातेजा नष्टशोकोऽभवत्तदा।
Etac-chrutvā mahātejā naṣṭa-śoko'bhavat tadā
Hearing this, the greatly radiant one was then freed of his sorrow,
धारयामास सुप्रीतो राघवः प्रयतात्मवान्॥28॥
Dhārayāmāsa suprīto Rāghavaḥ prayatāt-mavān
and Raghava, well pleased and composed in spirit, held it firmly in mind.
verse 29
आदित्यं प्रेक्ष्य जप्त्वा तु परं हर्षमवाप्तवान्।
Ādityaṃ prekṣya japtvā tu paraṃ harṣam-avāptavān
Gazing upon Aditya and reciting the hymn, he attained the highest joy.
त्रिराचम्य शुचिर्भूत्वा धनुरादाय वीर्यवान्॥29॥
Tri-ācamya śucir-bhūtvā dhanur-ādāya vīryavān
Sipping water three times and becoming pure, the valiant one took up his bow.
verse 30
रावणं प्रेक्ष्य हृष्टात्मा युद्धाय समुपागमत्।
Rāvaṇaṃ prekṣya hṛṣṭātmā yuddhāya samupāgamat
Looking upon Ravana with a gladdened heart, he advanced to the fight,
सर्वयत्नेन महता वधे तस्य धृतोऽभवत्॥30॥
Sarva-yatnena mahatā vadhe tasya dhṛto'bhavat
and with all his great effort he became resolved upon slaying him.
verse 31
अथ रविरवदन्निरीक्ष्य रामं मुदितमनाः परमं प्रहृष्यमाणः।
Atha ravi-ravadan-nirīkṣya Rāmaṃ mudita-manāḥ paramaṃ prahṛṣyamāṇaḥ
Then the Sun, beholding Rama, his mind delighted and rejoicing greatly, spoke;
निशिचरपतिसंक्षयं विदित्वा सुरगणमध्यगतो वचस्त्वरेति॥31॥
Niśicara-pati-saṃkṣayaṃ viditvā sura-gaṇa-madhyagato vacas-tvareti
knowing that the destruction of the lord of the night-wanderers was at hand, standing amid the host of gods, he uttered the words: make haste.
