Om. O gods, may we hear with our ears what is auspicious. O ones worthy of worship, may we see with our eyes what is auspicious. May we, praising you with steady limbs and bodies, enjoy the full life allotted to us by the gods.
Svasti na Indro vṛddha-śravāḥ svasti naḥ Pūṣā viśva-vedāḥ. Svasti nas-tārkṣyo ariṣṭa-nemiḥ svasti no Bṛhaspati-r-dadhātu. Oṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ
May Indra of ancient renown grant us well-being. May all-knowing Pushan grant us well-being. May Tarkshya of unharmed wheel grant us well-being. May Brihaspati grant us well-being. Om, peace, peace, peace.

Hariḥ Oṃ namaste Gaṇapataye. Tvameva pratyakṣaṃ tattvamasi. Tvameva kevalaṃ kartāsi. Tvameva kevalaṃ dhartāsi
Hari Om. Salutations to you, O Ganapati. You alone are the visible truth. You alone are the sole doer. You alone are the sole sustainer.
Tvameva kevalaṃ hartāsi. Tvameva sarvaṃ khalv-idaṃ brahmāsi. Tvaṃ sākṣād-ātmāsi nityam
You alone are the sole destroyer. You alone are truly all this, Brahman itself. You are, in truth, the eternal Self.
verse 2
Ṛtaṃ vacmi. Satyaṃ vacmi
I speak what is right. I speak what is true.
verse 3
Ava tvaṃ mām. Ava vaktāram. Ava śrotāram. Ava dātāram. Ava dhātāram. Avānūcānam-ava śiṣyam
Protect me. Protect the speaker. Protect the listener. Protect the giver. Protect the sustainer. Protect the teacher, protect the student.
Ava paścāttāt. Ava purastāt. Avottarāttāt. Ava dakṣiṇāttāt. Ava cordhvāttāt. Avādharāttāt. Sarvato māṃ pāhi pāhi samantāt
Protect me from behind. Protect me from before. Protect me from the north. Protect me from the south. Protect me from above. Protect me from below. Guard me, guard me, from every side.
verse 4
Tvaṃ vāṅmayastvaṃ cinmayaḥ. Tvam-ānandamayas-tvaṃ brahma-mayaḥ. Tvaṃ saccidānanda-advitīyo'si. Tvaṃ pratyakṣaṃ brahmāsi. Tvaṃ jñānamayo vijñānamayo'si
You are the essence of speech, you are the essence of consciousness. You are the essence of bliss, you are the essence of Brahman. You are being, consciousness and bliss, without a second. You are the visible Brahman. You are the essence of knowledge and of discernment.
verse 5
Sarvaṃ jagad-idaṃ tvatto jāyate. Sarvaṃ jagad-idaṃ tvattast-iṣṭhati. Sarvaṃ jagad-idaṃ tvayi layameṣyati. Sarvaṃ jagad-idaṃ tvayi pratyeti
This entire universe is born from you. This entire universe rests upon you. This entire universe will dissolve into you. This entire universe returns into you.
Tvaṃ bhūmir-āpo'nalo'nilo nabhaḥ. Tvaṃ catvāri vākpadāni
You are earth, water, fire, air and space. You are the four levels of speech.
verse 6
Tvaṃ guṇa-trayātītaḥ. Tvaṃ avasthā-trayātītaḥ. Tvaṃ deha-trayātītaḥ. Tvaṃ kāla-trayātītaḥ. Tvaṃ mūlādhāra-sthito'si nityam. Tvaṃ śakti-trayātmakaḥ
You are beyond the three gunas. You are beyond the three states (waking, dream, deep sleep). You are beyond the three bodies. You are beyond the three times (past, present, future). You dwell eternally in the muladhara. You embody the three powers (will, knowledge, action).
Tvāṃ yogino dhyāyanti nityam. Tvaṃ Brahmā tvaṃ Viṣṇus-tvaṃ Rudras-tvam-Indras-tvam-Agnis-tvaṃ Vāyus-tvaṃ Sūryas-tvaṃ Candramās-tvaṃ brahma bhūr-bhuvaḥ svarom
Yogis meditate on you always. You are Brahma, you are Vishnu, you are Rudra, you are Indra, you are Agni, you are Vayu, you are Surya, you are Chandrama, you are Brahman itself, the syllable that is earth, atmosphere and heaven.
verse 7
Gaṇādiṃ pūrvam-uccārya varṇādims-tadanantaram. Anusvāraḥ parataraḥ. Ardhendu-lasitam. Tāreṇa ṛddham. Etat-tava manu-svarūpam
Uttering first the syllable 'Gana' and then the letter that follows it, then the nasal sound, adorned above with the crescent moon, and joined with the sacred syllable Om: this is the form of your mantra.
Gakāraḥ pūrva-rūpam. Akāro madhyama-rūpam. Anusvāraś-cāntya-rūpam. Bindur-uttara-rūpam Nādaḥ sandhānam. Saṃhitā sandhiḥ. Saiṣā Gaṇeśa-vidyā. Gaṇaka ṛṣiḥ. Nicṛd-gāyatrī chandaḥ. Śrī-mahāgaṇapatir-devatā. Oṃ gaṃ gaṇapataye namaḥ
The letter 'ga' is the first form, 'a' is the middle form, the nasal sound is the final form, the dot (bindu) is the form above, and sound (nada) is their union: this is the joining. This is the sacred knowledge of Ganesha. Its sage is Ganaka, its metre is Nichrid-Gayatri, its deity is the great Ganapati. Om, salutations to Ganapati.
verse 8
Ekadantāya vidmahe vakratuṇḍāya dhīmahi. Tanno dantiḥ pracodayāt
We seek to know the one with a single tusk; we meditate upon the one with the curved trunk. May that tusked one inspire and guide us.
verse 9
Ekadantaṃ catur-hastaṃ pāśam-aṅkuśa-dhāriṇam. Radaṃ ca varadaṃ hastair-bibhrāṇaṃ mūṣaka-dhvajam. Raktaṃ lambodaraṃ śūrpa-karṇakaṃ rakta-vāsasam
One-tusked, four-armed, holding a noose and a goad, bearing his broken tusk and a gesture of blessing in his hands, with the mouse as his emblem, red in hue, large-bellied, with winnowing-fan ears, clothed in red.
Rakta-gandhānuliptāṅgaṃ rakta-puṣpaiḥ supūjitam. Bhaktānukampinaṃ devaṃ jagat-kāraṇam-acyutam. Āvirbhūtaṃ ca sṛṣṭyādau prakṛteḥ puruṣāt-param. Evaṃ dhyāyati yo nityaṃ sa yogī yogināṃ varaḥ
His body anointed with red sandal paste, well worshipped with red flowers: this god who is compassionate to his devotees, the unshakable cause of the universe, who appeared at the very beginning of creation, beyond both primal nature and the cosmic person. Whoever meditates thus on him always is the foremost among yogis.
verse 10
Namo vrāta-pataye namo gaṇa-pataye namaḥ pramatha-pataye namas-te'stu lambodarāya ekadantāya vighna-vināśine śiva-sutāya śrī-varada-mūrtaye namaḥ
Salutations to the lord of the sacred bands, salutations to the lord of the ganas, salutations to the lord of Shiva's attendants. Salutations to you, the large-bellied one, the one-tusked one, the destroyer of obstacles, the son of Shiva, the auspicious bestower of boons.
verse 11
Etad-atharva-śīrṣaṃ yo'dhīte. Sa brahma-bhūyāya kalpate. Sa sarva-vighnair-na bādhyate. Sa sarvataḥ sukham-edhate. Sa pañca-mahāpāpāt pramucyate
Whoever studies this Atharvashirsha becomes fit for union with Brahman. He is untroubled by any obstacle. He flourishes in happiness on every side. He is freed from the five great sins.
Sāyam-adhīyāno divasa-kṛtaṃ pāpaṃ nāśayati. Prātar-adhīyāno rātri-kṛtaṃ pāpaṃ nāśayati. Sāyaṃ prātaḥ prayuñjānaḥ pāpo'pāpo bhavati. Dharmārtha-kāma-mokṣaṃ ca vindati. Idam-atharva-śīrṣam-aśiṣyāya na deyam. Yo yadi mohād dāsyati. Sa pāpīyān bhavati. Sahasrāvartanād-yaṃ yaṃ kāmam-adhīte. Taṃ tam-anena sādhayet
Reciting it in the evening destroys the sins done during the day. Reciting it at dawn destroys the sins done during the night. Reciting it both evening and morning, even a sinner becomes free of sin. He attains righteousness, prosperity, desire and liberation. This Atharvashirsha should not be given to one who is not a disciple. Whoever gives it out of delusion becomes deeply sinful. By reciting it a thousand times, whatever desire one holds, that very desire is accomplished through it.
verse 12
Anena gaṇapatim-abhiṣiñcati. Sa vāgmī bhavati. Caturthyām-anaśnan japati. Sa vidyāvān bhavati. Ity-atharvaṇa-vākyam. Brahmādyācaraṇaṃ vidyān-na bibheti kadācaneti
Whoever bathes an image of Ganapati while reciting this becomes eloquent in speech. Whoever recites it while fasting on the fourth lunar day becomes learned. This is the teaching of the Atharvan sage. One who knows the conduct that begins with Brahman never has cause for fear.
verse 13
Yo dūrvāṅkurair-yajati sa vaiśravaṇopamo bhavati. Yo lājair-yajati. Sa yaśo-vān bhavati. Sa medhāvān bhavati. Yo modaka-sahasreṇa yajati sa vāñchita-phalam-avāpnoti. Yaḥ sājya samid-bhir-yajati. Sa sarvaṃ labhate sa sarvaṃ labhate
Whoever worships with fresh durva grass shoots becomes like Vaishravana (Kubera, lord of wealth). Whoever worships with parched grain becomes famous; he becomes wise. Whoever worships with a thousand modakas obtains the fruit he desires. Whoever worships with sacrificial sticks dipped in ghee obtains everything, obtains everything.
verse 14
Aṣṭau brāhmaṇān samyag grāhayitvā sūrya-varcasvī bhavati. Sūrya-grahe mahā-nadyāṃ pratimā-sannidhau vā japtvā siddha-mantro bhavati. Mahā-vighnāt pramucyate. Mahā-doṣāt pramucyate. Mahā-pāpāt pramucyate. Mahā-pratyavāyāt pramucyate
Whoever properly teaches this to eight brahmins becomes radiant as the sun. Whoever recites it during a solar eclipse, or beside a great river, or in the presence of a sacred image, gains a mantra of proven power. He is freed from great obstacles. He is freed from great faults. He is freed from great sins. He is freed from great wrongs.
Sa sarva-vid-bhavati sa sarva-vid-bhavati. Ya evaṃ veda. Ityupaniṣat
He becomes one who knows all, he becomes one who knows all. Thus knows one who understands this. Thus ends the Upanishad.
