Guru Stotram (Gurur Brahma Gurur Vishnu)

verse 1

अखण्डमण्डलाकारं व्याप्तं येन चराचरम् ।

Akhaṇḍamaṇḍalākāraṃ vyāptaṃ yena carācaram |

By whom all that moves and does not move is pervaded, whose form is the unbroken whole,

तत्पदं दर्शितं येन तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः

Tatpadaṃ darśitaṃ yena tasmai śrīgurave namaḥ

and by whom that state has been shown: to that revered Guru, salutation.

verse 2

अज्ञानतिमिरान्धस्य ज्ञानाञ्जनशलाकया ।

Ajñānatimirāndhasya jñānāñjanaśalākayā |

For one blinded by the darkness of ignorance, with the applicator rod bearing the salve of knowledge,

चक्षुरुन्मीलितं येन तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः

Cakṣurunmīlitaṃ yena tasmai śrīgurave namaḥ

by whom the eye was opened: to that revered Guru, salutation.

verse 3

गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः ।

Gururbrahmā gururviṣṇuḥ gururdevo maheśvaraḥ |

The Guru is Brahma, the Guru is Vishnu, the Guru is the god Maheshwara,

गुरुरेव परं ब्रह्म तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः

Gurureva paraṃ brahma tasmai śrīgurave namaḥ

the Guru indeed is the supreme Brahman: to that revered Guru, salutation.

verse 4

स्थावरं जङ्गमं व्याप्तं यत्किञ्चित्सचराचरम् ।

Sthāvaraṃ jaṅgamaṃ vyāptaṃ yatkiñcitsacarācaram |

Whatever there is, fixed or moving, pervaded, with all that stirs and all that stands still,

तत्पदं दर्शितं येन तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः

Tatpadaṃ darśitaṃ yena tasmai śrīgurave namaḥ

and by whom that state has been shown: to that revered Guru, salutation.

verse 5

चिन्मयं व्यापि यत्सर्वं त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम् ।

Cinmayaṃ vyāpi yatsarvaṃ trailokyaṃ sacarācaram |

All the three worlds with what moves and does not move, pervaded and made of consciousness,

तत्पदं दर्शितं येन तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः

Tatpadaṃ darśitaṃ yena tasmai śrīgurave namaḥ

and by whom that state has been shown: to that revered Guru, salutation.

verse 6

सर्वश्रुतिशिरोरत्नविराजितपदाम्बुजः ।

Sarvaśrutiśiroratnavirājitapadāmbujaḥ |

Whose lotus feet are made resplendent by the crest-jewels of all the shrutis,

वेदान्ताम्बुजसूर्यो यः तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः

Vedāntāmbujasūryo yaḥ tasmai śrīgurave namaḥ

who is the sun to the lotus of Vedanta: to that revered Guru, salutation.

verse 7

चैतन्यश्शाश्वतश्शान्तः व्योमातीतो निरञ्जनः ।

Caitanyaśśāśvataśśāntaḥ vyomātīto nirañjanaḥ |

Consciousness itself, everlasting, at peace, beyond space, without stain,

बिन्दुनादकलातीतः तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः

Bindunādakalātītaḥ tasmai śrīgurave namaḥ

beyond bindu, nada and kala: to that revered Guru, salutation.

verse 8

ज्ञानशक्तिसमारूढः तत्त्वमालाविभूषितः ।

Jñānaśaktisamārūḍhaḥ tattvamālāvibhūṣitaḥ |

Mounted upon the power of knowledge, adorned with the garland of the tattvas,

भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदाता च तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः

Bhuktimuktipradātā ca tasmai śrīgurave namaḥ

and giver of both worldly enjoyment and liberation: to that revered Guru, salutation.

verse 9

अनेकजन्मसम्प्राप्तकर्मबन्धविदाहिने ।

Anekajanmasamprāptakarmabandhavidāhine |

To the one who burns away the bondage of karma gathered over many births,

आत्मज्ञानप्रदानेन तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः

Ātmajñānapradānena tasmai śrīgurave namaḥ

by the gift of Self-knowledge: to that revered Guru, salutation.

verse 10

शोषणं भवसिन्धोश्च ज्ञापनं सारसम्पदः ।

Śoṣaṇaṃ bhavasindhośca jñāpanaṃ sārasampadaḥ |

The drying up of the ocean of becoming, and the making known of the essential wealth:

गुरोः पादोदकं सम्यक् तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः

Guroḥ pādodakaṃ samyak tasmai śrīgurave namaḥ

the water from the Guru's feet does all this fully: to that revered Guru, salutation.

verse 11

न गुरोरधिकं तत्त्वं न गुरोरधिकं तपः ।

Na guroradhikaṃ tattvaṃ na guroradhikaṃ tapaḥ |

There is no truth higher than the Guru, no austerity higher than the Guru,

तत्त्वज्ञानात् परं नास्ति तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः

Tattvajñānāt paraṃ nāsti tasmai śrīgurave namaḥ

and nothing beyond the knowing of that truth: to that revered Guru, salutation.

verse 12

मन्नाथः श्रीजगन्नाथः मद्गुरुः श्रीजगद्गुरुः ।

Mannāthaḥ śrījagannāthaḥ madguruḥ śrījagadguruḥ |

My lord is the Lord of the world, my Guru is the Guru of the world,

मदात्मा सर्वभूतात्मा तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः

Madātmā sarvabhūtātmā tasmai śrīgurave namaḥ

my self is the Self of all beings: to that revered Guru, salutation.

verse 13

गुरुरादिरनादिश्च गुरुः परमदैवतम् ।

Gururādiranādiśca guruḥ paramadaivatam |

The Guru is the beginning and yet without beginning, the Guru is the supreme deity,

गुरोः परतरं नास्ति तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः

Guroḥ parataraṃ nāsti tasmai śrīgurave namaḥ

there is nothing higher than the Guru: to that revered Guru, salutation.

verse 14

त्वमेव माता च पिता त्वमेव । त्वमेव बन्धुश्च सखा त्वमेव ।

Tvameva mātā ca pitā tvameva | tvameva bandhuśca sakhā tvameva |

You alone are mother, and You alone father; You alone are kinsman, and You alone friend.

त्वमेव विद्या द्रविणं त्वमेव । त्वमेव सर्वं मम देवदेव

Tvameva vidyā draviṇaṃ tvameva | tvameva sarvaṃ mama devadeva

You alone are learning, You alone wealth; You alone are everything to me, God of gods.
