Gahana-dahana-niradahana laṃka niḥsaṃka baṃka-bhuva
who burned the thick grove to ashes and fearlessly took Lanka, that rugged land,
Jātudhāna-balavāna māna-mada-davana pavanasuva

Kapisa kesa karakasa laṃgūra khala-dala-bala-bhānana
reddish-brown fur, a stiff tail, breaker of the wicked host's strength:
Kaha tulasidāsa basa jāsu ura mārutasuta mūrati vikaṭa
says Tulsidas, in whose heart this awesome form of the Wind's son dwells,
Saṃtāpa pāpa tehi puruṣa pahi sapanehu~ nahiṃ āvata nikaṭa
grief and sin do not come near that person even in a dream.

Duvana dala damana ko kauna tulasīsa hai pavana ko pūta rajapūta ruro
Who else can crush the demon host, says Tulsi's Lord? None but the Wind's son, that splendid warrior.
verse 4

Drona so pahāra liyo khyāla hī ukhāri kara kaṃduka jyoṃ kapi khela bela kaiso phala bho
He uprooted a mountain like Drona as if in play and held it in His hand like a ball: for the monkey it was sport, the hill no more than a bel fruit.

Kamaṭha kī pīṭhi jāke goḍani kī gār̤aaiṃ māno nāpa ke bhājana bhari jala nidhi jala bho
The dents His feet left on the tortoise's back were as though the ocean's water had been measured out into vessels.

Jātudhāna dāvana parāvana ko durga bhayo mahā mīna bāsa timi tomani ko thala bho
Those hollows became a fortress for demons fleeing the burning, and dry standing-ground for the great fish and sea-monsters.

Kumbhakarana rāvana payoda nāda īdhana ko tulasī pratāpa jāko prabala anala bho
Kumbhakarna, Ravana and Meghanada were the fuel, and Tulsi says His blazing majesty became the fire that consumed it.

Pāpa tāpa timira tuhina nighaṭana paṭu sevaka saroruha sukhada bhānu bhora ko
Skilled at melting the frost of sin and affliction, He is the dawn sun that opens the lotus which is His servant.

Mahābala sīma mahā bhīma mahābāna ita mahābīra bidita barāyo raghubīra ko
The very limit of great strength, greatly terrible, of mighty arrows; the renowned Mahavira, chosen by Raghuvira.

Sīya-sukha-dāyaka dulāro raghunāyaka ko sevaka sahāyaka hai sāhasī samīra ko
Giver of joy to Sita, darling of Raghunatha, helper of His servants: the bold son of the Wind.
verse 11
Racibe ko bidhi jaise pālibe ko hari hara mīca māribe ko jyāībe ko sudhāpāna bho
As Brahma is for creating and Hari for sustaining, as Shiva is for killing and the drink of nectar for bringing back to life,
Dharibe ko dharani tarani tama dalibe ko sokhibe kṛsānu poṣibe ko hima bhānu bho
as the earth is for bearing and the sun for driving off darkness, as fire is for drying up and the cool-rayed moon for nourishing,
Khala duḥkha doṣibe ko jana paritoṣibe ko mā~gibo malīnatā ko modaka dudāna bho
as there is fault-finding for the wicked and contentment for the devotee, and as a sweet is given twice over to answer a beggar's shabbiness,
Ārata kī ārati nivāribe ko tihu~ pura tulasī ko sāheba haṭhīlo hanumāna bho
so for driving away the distress of the afflicted, in all three worlds Tulsi's master is the unyielding Hanuman.
verse 12
Knowing His servant's service, Janaki's lord honours the bond; Shiva who bears the trident is favourable, and the lord of heaven bows.
Devī deva dānava dayāvane hvai joraiṃ hātha bāpure barāka kahā aura rājā rā~ka ko
Goddesses, gods and demons fold their hands in awe: what then are a wretched king or a poor beggar?
Jāgata sovata baiṭhe bāgata binoda moda tāke jo anartha so samartha eka ā~ka ko
Waking, sleeping, sitting, at play or in delight, whatever calamity comes to him, the One who is able is his single mark.
Saba dina ruro parai pūro jahā~ tahā~ tāhi jāke hai bharoso hiye hanumāna hā~ka ko
Every day goes well and full for him wherever he is, who keeps in his heart the trust of Hanuman's battle-cry.
verse 13
Sānuga sagauri sānukūla sūlapāni tāhi lokapāla sakala lakhana rāma jānakī
For him Shiva who bears the trident, with His attendants and with Gauri, is favourable; so are all the world-guardians, and Lakshmana, Rama and Janaki.
Loka paraloka ko bisoka so tiloka tāhi tulasī tamāi kahā kāhū bīra ānakī
In this world and the next he is beyond sorrow, and in all three worlds too: says Tulsi, what longing has he left for any other hero?
Kesarī kisora bandīchora ke nevāje saba kīrati bimala kapi karunānidhāna kī
Kesari's son, freer of captives, has favoured them all; spotless is the fame of the monkey who is a store of compassion.
Bālaka jyoṃ pāli haiṃ kṛpālu muni siddhatā ko jāke hiye hulasati hā~ka hanumāna kī
The compassionate One will rear him like a child up to the perfection of a sage, in whose heart Hanuman's battle-cry rings with joy.
verse 14
Karunānidhāna balabuddhi ke nidhāna hau mahimā nidhāna gunajñāna ke nidhāna hau
You are a store of compassion, a store of strength and wisdom; You are a store of greatness, a store of virtue and knowledge.
Bāma deva rupa bhūpa rāma ke sanehī nāma leta deta artha dharma kāma nirabāna hau
You are Shiva in form, dear to King Rama; at the taking of Your name come dharma, wealth, desire and release.
Āpane prabhāva sītārāma ke subhāva sīla loka beda bidhi ke bidūṣa hanumāna hau
By Your own power, and by the temper and character of Sita and Rama, You are learned in the world, the Veda and the rule, Hanuman.
Mana kī bacana kī karama kī tihū~ prakāra tulasī tihāro tuma sāheba sujāna hau
In thought, in word and in deed, in all three ways, Tulsi is Yours; You are his discerning master.
verse 15
Mana ko agama tana sugama kiye kapīsa kāja mahārāja ke samāja sāja sāje haiṃ
What the mind cannot reach He made easy for the body, doing the monkey-king's work and setting in order the great king's whole array.
Devabaṃdī chora ranarora kesarī kisora juga juga jaga tere birada birāje haiṃ
Freer of the gods from prison, roarer in battle, son of Kesari: age after age Your titles have shone in the world.
Bīra barajora ghaṭi jora tulasī kī ora suni sakucāne sādhu khala gana gāje haiṃ
Overpowering hero, Tulsi's side has grown weak; hearing it the good are abashed, while the wicked crowd roars.
Bigarī sa~vāra aṃjanī kumāra kīje mohiṃ jaise hota āye hanumāna ke nivāje haiṃ
Son of Anjani, set right what has gone wrong; make me as those have been made whom Hanuman has favoured.
verse 16
Jāna siromani ho hanumāna sadā jana ke mana bāsa tihāro
You are the crest-jewel of the knowing, Hanuman; Your dwelling is always in Your people's minds.
R̤haāro bigāro maiṃ kāko kahā kehi kārana khījhata hauṃ to tihāro
Whom have I ruined, what have I spoiled, and for what cause are You angry with me, who am Your own?
Sāheba sevaka nāte to hāto kiyo so tahāṃ tulasī ko na cāro
By the bond of master and servant, if You have withdrawn Your hand, then Tulsi has no other recourse there.
Doṣa sunāye taiṃ āgehu~ ko hośiyāra hvaiṃ hoṃ mana to hiya hāro
Tell me my fault and I will be careful hereafter; but the mind is willing while the heart has already lost.
verse 17
What You establish, not even Mahesha can unseat; what You unseat, who can make firm, once You have set it in Your heart, monkey?
Tere nibāje garība nibāja birājata bairina ke ura sāle
Those whom You favour, protector of the poor, shine out, and it galls the hearts of their enemies.
Saṃkaṭa soca sabai tulasī liye nāma phaṭai makarī ke se jāle
All Tulsi's troubles and anxieties, at the taking of Your name, tear like a spider's web.
Būḍha bhaye bali merihiṃ bāra ki hāri pare bahutai nata pāle
Have You grown old, that my turn should come to this, or are You worn out with protecting so many who bow to You?
verse 18
Siṃdhu tare bar̤ae bīra dale khala jāre haiṃ laṃka se baṃka mavāse
You crossed the sea, crushed great warriors, burned Lanka and its crooked strongholds,
Taiṃ rani kehari kehari ke bidale ari kuṃjara chaila chavāse
on the battlefield You, the lion, tore open enemy elephants as if they were young calves.
Toso samattha susāheba seī sahai tulasī dukha doṣa davā se
Serving so able and good a master, must Tulsi still endure the wildfire of sorrow and fault?
Bānarabāja ! bar̤hae khala khecara lījata kyoṃ na lapeṭi lavāse
Hawk among monkeys! Why not snatch up these grown wicked birds and wring them, as a hawk takes small prey?
verse 19
Accha vimardana kānana bhāni dasānana ānana bhā na nihāro
Crusher of Aksha, breaker of the grove, at whose face the ten-faced one could not look,
Bāridanāda akaṃpana kuṃbhakarana se kuñjara kehari vāro
to elephants such as Meghanada, Akampana and Kumbhakarna You were the lion.
Rāma pratāpa hutāsana kaccha vipaccha samīra samīra dulāro
You are the fire of Rama's majesty, guardian of your own side against the other, the Wind's own darling,
Pāpa te sāpa te tāpa tihū~ teṃ sadā tulasī kaha so rakhavāro
and Tulsi says: from sin, from curse and from the three afflictions, He is always the one who guards.
verse 20
The world knows whom Hanuman has favoured; weighing Your servant's heart, I am Your sacrifice, do not forget Your word.
Sevā joga tulasī kabahu~ kahā cūka parī sāheba subhāva kapi sāhibī saṃbhāriye
In service fit to be given, has Tulsi ever fallen short? Master, it is a monkey's nature; uphold Your own lordship.
Aparādhī jāni kījai sāsati sahasa bhānti modaka marai jo tāhi māhura na māriye
If You judge me an offender, punish me a thousand ways; but if a sweet will kill him, do not use poison.
Sāhasī samīra ke dulāre raghubīra jū ke bā~ha pīra mahābīra begi hī nivāriye
Darling of the bold Wind, beloved of Raghuvira, Mahavira: take away this pain in the arm, and take it away at once.
verse 21
Bālaka biloki bali bāreṃ teṃ āpano kiyo dīnabandhu dayā kīnhīṃ nirupādhi nyāriye
Seeing a child, from my earliest years You made me Your own; friend of the helpless, You showed a kindness with no motive in it: mark that.
Rāvaro bharoso tulasī ke rāvaroī bala āsa rāvarīyai dāsa rāvaro vicāriye
Yours is Tulsi's trust, Yours alone his strength, Yours his hope, and Yours the servant: consider it.
Bar̤ao bikarāla kali kāko na bihāla kiyo māthe pagu bali ko nihāri so nibāriye
The Kali age is vast and dreadful: whom has it not undone? See whose foot is on my head, and drive it off.
Kesarī kisora ranarora barajora bīra bā~ha pīra rāhu mātu jyauṃ pachāri māriye
Kesari's son, roarer in battle, overpowering hero: dash down this pain in the arm and kill it, as You dashed down Rahu's mother.
verse 22
Uthape thapanathira thape uthapanahāra kesarī kumāra bala āpano saṃbāriye
You make firm what was unseated and unseat what was made firm; son of Kesari, gather up Your own strength.
Rāma ke gulāmani ko kāma taru rāmadūta mose dīna dūbare ko takiyā tihāriye
Wish-tree of Rama's servants, Rama's messenger: for one as poor and frail as I am, You are the only pillow.
Sāheba samartha to soṃ tulasī ke māthe para soū aparādha binu bīra bā~dhi māriye
With so able a master as You over Tulsi's head, is he still to be bound and beaten without any offence, hero?
Pokharī bisāla bā~hu bali bāricara pīra makarī jyoṃ pakari ke badana bidāriye
My broad arm is the pond and the pain the water-beast in it; seize it as You seized the crocodile and tear its mouth open.
verse 23
By love for Rama, by Rama's own courage, by Lakshmana and Sita, by devotion to Rama: drive away this anxiety and distress.
Muda marakaṭa roga bārinidhi heri hāre jīva jāmavaṃta ko bharoso tero bhāriye
Joy is the monkey host, the disease an ocean; the creature has looked at it and despaired: Jambavan's whole trust rests on You.
Kūdiye kṛpāla tulasī suprema pabbayateṃ suthala subela bhālū baiṭhi kai vicāriye
Leap, compassionate one, from the mountain of Tulsi's true love; the bear sat on the fair slope of Suvela and took counsel.
Mahābīra bā~kure barākī bā~ha pīra kyoṃ na laṃkinī jyoṃ lāta ghāta hī marori māriye
Gallant Mahavira, why not wring this wretched arm-pain and kill it with one kick, as You did Lankini?
verse 24
Loka paralokahu~ tiloka na vilokiyata tose samaratha caṣa cārihū~ nihāriye
In this world, in the next and in all three worlds, look where You will: none as able as You is to be seen.
Karma kāla lokapāla aga jaga jīvajāla nātha hātha saba nija mahimā bicāriye
Karma, Time, the world-guardians, the whole web of moving and unmoving life: all are in Your hand, lord; consider Your own greatness.
Khāsa dāsa rāvaro nivāsa tero tāsu ura tulasī so deva dukhī dekhiata bhāriye
He is Your own particular servant and Your dwelling is in his heart; yet Tulsi, O god, is seen to be grievously afflicted.
Bāta tarumūla bā~hūsūla kapikacchu beli upajī sakeli kapi keli hī ukhāriye
Wind is the root of the tree and the arm's ache the itching creeper grown on it; gather it up, monkey, and uproot it in play.
verse 25
Karama karāla kaṃsa bhūmipāla ke bharose bakī baka bhaginī kāhū teṃ kahā ḍaraigī
Trusting in cruel Karma, that king Kansa, why should Baki, sister of Baka, fear anyone at all?
Bar̤aī bikarāla bāla ghātinī na jāta kahi bā~hū bala bālaka chabīle choṭe charaigī
Vast and dreadful, a killer of children beyond telling, she will cheat handsome little boys by the strength of her arms.
Āī hai banāī beṣa āpa hī bicāri dekha pāpa jāya saba ko gunī ke pāle paraigī
She has come in disguise: think and see for Yourself. Her sin will be undone, for she will fall into the hands of one who knows the craft.
Pūtanā pisācinī jyauṃ kapi kānha tulasī kī bā~ha pīra mahābīra tere māre maraigī
As Putana the demoness died at Krishna's hands, monkey, so Tulsi's arm-pain will die when Mahavira strikes it.
verse 26
Is it of the forehead, or of Time, or of anger, or of the three humours? A cruel ache it is, of sin, of fever, of trickery, of some shadow.
Karamana kūṭa kī ki jantra mantra būṭa kī parāhi jāhi pāpinī malīna mana mā~ha kī
Is it of some hidden deed, or of spell, charm and root? Be gone, you sinful thing that lives in a foul mind.
Paihahi sajāya nata kahata bajāya tohi bābarī na hohi bāni jāni kapi nā~ha kī
You will be punished, or else I say it out loud to you: do not be mad, learn what the monkey-lord's way is.
Āna hanumāna kī duhāī balavāna kī sapatha mahābīra kī jo rahai pīra bā~ha kī
I invoke Hanuman, I swear by the mighty one, I take the oath of Mahavira: if the pain in the arm remains.
verse 27
Siṃhikā sa~hāri bala surasā sudhāri chala laṃkinī pachāri māri bāṭikā ujārī hai
You destroyed Simhika by force, dealt with Sursa by a trick, felled and killed Lankini and laid the garden waste.
Laṃka parajāri makarī bidāri bāra bāra jātudhāna dhāri dhūri dhānī kari ḍārī hai
You burned Lanka, tore the crocodile apart, and again and again ground the demon hosts to dust.
Tori jamakātari maṃdodarī kaṭhori ānī rāvana kī rānī meghanāda mahatārī hai
You broke Yama's dagger and dragged Mandodari off by force, Ravana's queen and Meghanada's mother.
Bhīra bā~ha pīra kī nipaṭa rākhī mahābīra kauna ke sakoca tulasī ke soca bhārī hai
Yet the crowding pain of the arm You have let stand, Mahavira: out of consideration for whom? Tulsi's anxiety is heavy.
verse 28
Tero bāli keli bīra suni sahamata dhīra bhūlata sarīra sudhi sakra ravi rāhu kī
Hearing of Your childhood play, hero, the steadfast are dismayed; Indra, the Sun and Rahu forget the very sense of their bodies.
Terī bā~ha basata bisoka loka pāla saba tero nāma leta rahaiṃ ārati na kāhu kī
Where Your arm rests, all the world-guardians live free of sorrow; those who take Your name are left with no distress at all.
Sāma dāma bheda vidhi bedahū labeda sidhi hātha kapinātha hī ke coṭī cora sāhu kī
Conciliation, gift and division, the Veda's own methods and the ways of attainment: all are in the monkey-lord's hand, the crown of the honest and of the thief alike.
Ālasa anakha parihāsa kai sikhāvana hai ete dina rahī pīra tulasī ke bāhu kī
Is it out of idleness, or vexation, or by way of jest, or is it a lesson, that Tulsi's arm has been in pain so many days?
verse 29
Ṭūkani ko ghara ghara ḍolata ka~gāla boli bāla jyoṃ kṛpāla nata pāla pāli poso hai
A beggar wandering house to house for scraps: You called him as one calls a child, compassionate one, and reared and fed the one who bowed to You.
Kīnhī hai sa~bhāra sāra a~janī kumāra bīra āpano bisāri haiṃ na merehū bharoso hai
You have taken all the care there was, son of Anjani, hero; You will not forget Your own, and my trust does not fail either.
Itano parekho saba bhānti samaratha āju kapirāja sāṃcī kahauṃ ko tiloka toso hai
This much is my complaint: You are able in every way, monkey-king; I say it truly, who in the three worlds is like You?
Sāsati sahata dāsa kīje pekhi parihāsa cīrī ko marana khela bālakani koso hai
The servant bears the punishment while You look on it as sport; but killing an ant is play only to children.
verse 30
Āpane hī pāpa teṃ tripāta teṃ ki sāpa teṃ bar̤haī hai bā~ha bedana kahī na sahi jāti hai
Whether from my own sin, or from the three afflictions, or from a curse, the ache in the arm has grown past bearing, and cannot be told.
Auṣadha aneka jantra mantra ṭoṭakādi kiye bādi bhaye devatā manāye adhīkāti hai
Many medicines, charms, spells and counter-charms I have tried, and all went for nothing; the gods were propitiated and it only grew worse.
Creator, sustainer, destroyer, karma and Time: it is the world's whole web, and whoever will not accept it, so much the worse.
Cero tero tulasī tū mero kahyo rāma dūta ḍhīla terī bīra mohi pīra teṃ pirāti hai
Tulsi is Your servant, and You said Yourself, Rama's messenger, that You are mine; hero, Your delay is a worse pain to me than the pain.
verse 31
Dūta rāma rāya ko sapūta pūta vāya ko samatva hātha pāya ko sahāya asahāya ko
Messenger of King Rama, worthy son of the Wind, able in hand and foot, helper of the helpless,
Bā~kī biradāvalī bidita beda gāiyata rāvana so bhaṭa bhayo muṭhikā ke dhāya ko
Your gallant roll of titles is known, and the Vedas sing it: that Ravana, such a warrior, fell to the rush of a single fist.
Ete baḍe sāheba samartha ko nivājo āja sīdata susevaka bacana mana kāya ko
So great and able a master's favour, and yet today a good servant suffers in word, mind and body.
Thorī bā~ha pīra kī bar̤aī galāni tulasī ko kauna pāpa kopa lopa prakaṭa prabhāya ko
A small pain in the arm, but a great shame; whose sin is it, whose anger, that Tulsi's plain power is hidden away?
verse 32
Devī deva danuja manuja muni siddha nāga choṭe bar̤ae jīva jete cetana aceta haiṃ
Goddesses, gods, demons, men, sages, siddhas and nagas, all living things great and small, conscious and unconscious,
Pūtanā pisācī jātudhānī jātudhāna bāga rāma dūta kī rajāī māthe māni leta haiṃ
Putana and the she-demons, the demon women and the demons in their throngs: all take Rama's messenger's command upon their heads.
Ghora jantra mantra kūṭa kapaṭa kuroga joga hanumāna āna suni chār̤ata niketa haiṃ
Dire spells and charms, trickery and deceit, foul diseases and afflictions: hearing Hanuman's name invoked, they leave the house.
Krodha kīje karma ko prabodha kīje tulasī ko sodha kīje tinako jo doṣa dukha deta haiṃ
Turn Your anger on the deed, wake Tulsi to knowledge, and set right those who give him fault and pain.
verse 33
Tere bala bānara jitāye rana rāvana soṃ tere ghāle jātudhāna bhaye ghara ghara ke
By Your strength the monkeys won the war against Ravana; by Your blows the demons were finished, household by household.
Tere bala rāma rāja kiye saba sura kāja sakala samāja sāja sāje raghubara ke
By Your strength Rama's reign was made and all the gods' work done, and Raghuvara's whole array was set in order.
Tero gunagāna suni gīrabāna pulakata sajala bilocana biraṃci harihara ke
Hearing Your praises sung, the gods thrill, and the eyes of Brahma, Hari and Hara fill with tears.
Tulasī ke māthe para hātha phero kīsa nātha dekhiye na dāsa dukhī toso kanigara ke
Pass Your hand over Tulsi's head, lord of monkeys; do not let a servant of one as great as You be seen in misery.
verse 34
Pālo tere ṭūka ko parehū cūka mūkiye na kūra kaur̤aī dūko hauṃ āpanī ora heriye
I am reared on Your scraps; if I have slipped, do not stay silent; I am not worth a cracked cowrie, so look my way.
Bhorānātha bhore hī saroṣa hota thore doṣa poṣi toṣi thāpi āpano na ava ḍeriye
Simple lord, You are angry over a small fault out of Your very simplicity; nourish it, be pleased, establish Your own, and do not cast me out now.
A~bu tū hauṃ a~bu cūra a~bu tū hauṃ ḍiṃbha so na būjhiye bilaṃba avalaṃba mere teriye
You are the mango, I the mango's stone; You are the mango, I the sprout: do not delay, my only support is Yours.
Bālaka bikala jāni pāhi prema pahicāni tulasī kī bā~ha para lāmī lūma pheriye
Know the child is distressed and protect him, recognise his love; pass Your long tail over Tulsi's arm.
verse 35
Gheri liyo rogani kujogani kulogani jyauṃ bāsara jalada ghana ghaṭā dhuki dhāī hai
Diseases, ill conjunctions and ill company have closed in on me, as clouds gather and rush in by day.
Barasata bāri pīra jāriye javāse jasa roṣa binu doṣa dhūma mūla malināī hai
The rain that falls burns me like the javasa plant scorched by pain; anger without cause is the smoke, and the root of it is my own foulness.
Karunānidhāna hanumāna mahā balavāna heri ha~si hā~ki phūṃki phauṃjai te ur̤aāī hai
Store of compassion, Hanuman, greatly strong: with one look, one laugh, one shout and one breath You blew that army away.
Khāye huto tulasī kuroga rār̤ha rākasani kesarī kisora rākhe bīra bariāī hai
The foul disease and its demon rabble had all but eaten Tulsi; Kesari's son, the hero, has kept him by main force.
verse 36
Rāma gulāma tu hī hanumāna gosā~ī susā~ī sadā anukūlo
Rama's servant, You alone, Hanuman Gosain, a good master and always favourable,
Pālyo hauṃ bāla jyoṃ ākhara dū pitu mātu soṃ maṃgala moda samūlo
You reared me like a child; from two syllables came father, mother, well-being and joy, root and all.
The ache of the arm cries out from the arm itself; distressed, I have forgotten what joy is.
Śrī raghubīra nivāriye pīra rahauṃ darabāra paro laṭi lūlo
Shri Raghuvira, take away the pain; let me stay at Your court, fallen and lamed as I am.
verse 37
Kāla kī karālatā karama kaṭhināī kīdhau pāpa ke prabhāva kī subhāya bāya bāvare
Is it Time's cruelty, or the hardness of karma, or the effect of sin, or is the wind itself gone mad?
Bedana kubhā~ti so sahī na jāti rāti dina soī bā~ha gahī jo gahī samīra ḍābare
The pain of this evil kind cannot be borne, night or day; that same arm was seized which the Wind's son had held.
Lāyo taru tulasī tihāro so nihāri bāri sīṃciye malīna bho tayo hai tihu~ tāvare
Tulsi is a tree You planted: look at it and water it; it is withered, scorched by the three fevers.
Bhūtani kī āpanī parāye kī kṛpā nidhāna jāniyata sabahī kī rīti rāma rāvare
Of spirits and of one's own and of others: store of compassion, the ways of all are known to You, Rama's own.
verse 38
Pā~ya pīra peṭa pīra bā~ha pīra muṃha pīra jara jara sakala pīra maī hai
Pain in the feet, pain in the belly, pain in the arm, pain in the mouth: worn out, I have become all pain.
Deva bhūta pitara karama khala kāla graha mohi para davari damānaka sī daī hai
Gods, spirits, ancestors, karma, the wicked, Time and the planets have all fallen upon me like a squall of hail.
Hauṃ to binu mola ke bikāno bali bāre hīteṃ oṭa rāma nāma kī lalāṭa likhi laī hai
I was sold without price from childhood; the shelter of Rama's name is written on my forehead.
Ku~bhaja ke kiṃkara bikala būr̤hae gokhurani hāya rāma rāya aisī hāla kahū~ bhaī hai
Kumbhaja's servants, wretched and worn, drowning in cow's-hoof puddles: alas, King Rama, has such a state ever been?
verse 39
Bāhuka subāhu nīca līcara marīca mili mu~ha pīra ketujā kuroga jātudhāna hai
Bahuka, Subahu, the low Lichara and Maricha together: the pain in the mouth is a comet, the foul disease a demon.
Rāma nāma japa jāga kiyo cahoṃ sānurāga kāla kaise dūta bhūta kahā mere māna hai
I mean to make a sacrifice of repeating Rama's name with love: what are Time's messengers and spirits to me then?
Sumire sahāya rāma lakhana ākhara dauū jinake samūha sāke jāgata jahāna hai
Remembered, Rama and Lakshmana are my help, and those two syllables whose hosts keep the whole world awake.
Tulsi, take heart: He who destroyed Tadaka and pierced great warriors as though they were banyans has made His arrows ready.
verse 40
Bālapane sūdhe mana rāma sanamukha bhayo rāma nāma leta mā~gi khāta ṭūka ṭāka hauṃ
In childhood, with a straight heart, I turned to face Rama; taking Rama's name I begged and ate my scraps.
Parayo loka rīti meṃ punīta prīti rāma rāya moha basa baiṭho tori taraki tarāka hauṃ
Then I fell into the ways of the world, and the pure love of King Rama I broke off in delusion and sprang away.
Khoṭe khoṭe ācarana ācarata apanāyo aṃjanī kumāra sodhyo rāmapāni pāka hauṃ
Practising one bad conduct after another, still the son of Anjani took me as His own and made me fit for Rama's hand.
Tulasī gusā~ī bhayo bhoṃḍe dina bhūla gayo tāko phala pāvata nidāna paripāka hauṃ
Tulsi became a gosain, and in bad days he forgot; now at the ripening I am getting the fruit of that.
verse 41
Asana basana hīna biṣama biṣāda līna dekhi dīna dūbaro karai na hāya hāya ko
Without food, without clothing, sunk in bitter grief: seeing one so poor and frail, who would not cry out in pity?
Tulasī anātha so sanātha raghunātha kiyo diyo phala sīla siṃdhu āpane subhāya ko
Raghunatha made that orphaned Tulsi His own and gave him the fruit, out of His own nature, ocean of good conduct.
Nīca yahi bīca pati pāi bharu hāīgo bihāi prabhu bhajana bacana mana kāya ko
The low man, having gained standing in the meanwhile, grew heavy with it and let go of the Lord's worship in word, mind and body.
Tā teṃ tanu peṣiyata ghora baratora misa phūṭi phūṭi nikasata lona rāma rāya ko
That is why the body is seen covered in dreadful boils, and King Rama's salt keeps bursting out of it.
verse 42
Jīo jaga jānakījīvana ko kahāi jana maribe ko bārānasī bāri surasari ko
Let me live in the world called Janaki's Life, and for dying, Varanasi and the waters of the Ganga.
Tulasī ke dohū~ hātha modaka haiṃ aise ṭhā~ū jāke jiye muye soca karihaiṃ na lari ko
Tulsi has sweets in both hands in such a place: whoever lives or dies there, no one need grieve or quarrel.
Let people call me false or true, everyone says I am Rama's; in my own mind there is regard for neither Hara nor Hari.
Bhārī pīra dusaha sarīra teṃ bihāla hota soū raghubīra binu sakai dūra kari ko
The heavy pain, unbearable, leaves the body wretched; and who but Raghuvira can take it away?
verse 43
Sītāpati sāheba sahāya hanumāna nita hita upadeśa ko mahesa māno guru kai
Sita's lord is my master, Hanuman my constant help, and Mahesha I hold as my guru for his teaching of what is good.
Mānasa bacana kāya sarana tihāre pā~ya tumhare bharose sura maiṃ na jāne sura kai
In thought, word and body I take refuge at Your feet; trusting You, I have known no other god as god.
Byādhi bhūta janita upādhi kāhu khala kī samādhi kī jai tulasī ko jāni jana phura kai
Whether the trouble comes of disease or of spirits or of some wicked man, settle it; know Tulsi for a servant in truth.
Kapinātha raghunātha bholānātha bhūtanātha roga siṃdhu kyoṃ na ḍāriyata gāya khura kai
Lord of monkeys, Raghunatha, Bholanatha, lord of spirits: why not throw this ocean of disease away with a cow's hoof?
verse 44
Kahoṃ hanumāna soṃ sujāna rāma rāya soṃ kṛpānidhāna saṃkara soṃ sāvadhāna suniye
I say it to Hanuman, to the discerning King Rama, to Shankara the store of compassion: listen with care.
Haraṣa viṣāda rāga roṣa guna doṣa maī biracī birañcī saba dekhiyata duniye
Joy and sorrow, passion and anger, virtue and fault: the whole world is seen to be made of these, and Brahma fashioned it so.
Māyā jīva kāla ke karama ke subhāya ke karaiyā rāma beda kaheṃ sā~cī mana guniye
Maya, the living being, Time, karma and their natures: Rama is the maker of them all, so the Vedas say, and the mind should hold it true.
Tumha teṃ kahā na hoya hā hā so bujhaiye mohiṃ hauṃ hū~ rahoṃ maunahī vayo so jāni luniye
What is there that You cannot do? Alas, make me understand that; and I too will stay silent, knowing that whatever is sown is reaped.
