verse 1

Oṃ viśuddhajñānadehāya trivedīdivyacakṣuṣe |

Om. To him whose body is pure knowledge, whose divine eyes are the three Vedas,

Śreyaḥprāptinimittāya namaḥ somārdhadhāriṇe

who is the cause by which the highest good is attained: salutations to him who wears the crescent moon.

verse 2

Sarvametadvijānīyānmantrāṇāmapi kīlakam |

One should know all this to be the kilaka, the pin that locks even the mantras;

So'pi kṣemamavāpnoti satataṃ japyatatparaḥ

and he too obtains well-being who is constantly devoted to its recitation.

verse 3

Siddhyantyuccāṭanādīni karmāṇi sakalānyapi |

All rites whatsoever, beginning with uccatana, come to fulfilment

Etena stuvatāṃ devīṃ stotravṛndena bhaktitaḥ

for those who praise the Devi with devotion through this body of hymns.

verse 4

Na mantro nauṣadhaṃ tasya na kiñcidapi vidyate |

For such a one no other mantra, no herb, nothing else at all is needed;

Vinā japyena siddhyettu sarvamuccāṭanādikam

without any further recitation, all of uccatana and the rest would succeed,

verse 5

Samagrāṇyapi setsyanti lokaśaṅkāmimāṃ haraḥ |

indeed every one of them would succeed. Hara, holding this concern for the world,

Kṛtvā nimantrayāmāsa sarvamevamidaṃ śubham

placed this whole auspicious text under a binding condition.

verse 6

Stotraṃ vai caṇḍikāyāstu tacca guhyaṃ cakāra saḥ |

And he made that hymn of Chandika a secret thing.

Samāpnoti sa puṇyena tāṃ yathāvannimantraṇām

Whoever, through merit, fulfils that condition just as it is laid down,

verse 7

So'pi kṣemamavāpnoti sarvameva na saṃśayaḥ |

he too attains well-being in every respect; of this there is no doubt.

Kṛṣṇāyāṃ vā caturdaśyāmaṣṭamyāṃ vā samāhitaḥ

On the fourteenth or the eighth day of the dark fortnight, with a collected mind,

verse 8

Dadāti pratigṛhṇāti nānyathaiṣā prasīdati |

one gives it and one receives it; not otherwise is she pleased.

Itthaṃ rūpeṇa kīlena mahādevena kīlitam

Thus, in this manner, it was pinned fast by Mahadeva with a pin.

verse 9

Yo niṣkīlāṃ vidhāyaināṃ caṇḍīṃ japati nityaśaḥ |

Whoever, having drawn out the pin, recites this Chandi daily,

Sa siddhaḥ sa gaṇaḥ so'tha gandharvo jāyate dhruvam

he surely becomes a siddha, a gana, indeed a gandharva.

verse 10

Na caivāpāṭavaṃ tasya bhayaṃ kvāpi na jāyate |

No infirmity befalls him, nor does fear arise for him anywhere.

Nāpamṛtyuvaśaṃ yāti mṛte ca mokṣamāpnuyāt

He does not fall prey to untimely death, and at death he attains liberation.

verse 11

Jñātvā prārabhya kurvīta hyakurvāṇo vinaśyati |

Having understood it, one should begin and carry it through; one who begins and does not carry it through comes to ruin.

Tato jñātvaiva sampūrṇamidaṃ prārabhyate budhaiḥ

Therefore the wise begin this only after knowing it in full.

verse 12

Saubhāgyādi ca yatkiñcid dṛśyate lalanājane |

Whatever good fortune and the like is seen among women,

Tatsarvaṃ tatprasādena tena japyamidam śubham

all of it is by her grace; therefore this auspicious hymn should be recited.

verse 13

Śanaistu japyamāne'smin stotre sampattiruccakaiḥ |

When this hymn is recited unhurriedly, abundant prosperity

Bhavatyeva samagrāpi tataḥ prārabhyameva tat

arises in full measure; therefore it should indeed be undertaken.

verse 14

Aiśvaryaṃ tatprasādena saubhāgyārogyameva ca |

By her grace come lordship, and good fortune, and health,

Śatruhāniḥ paro mokṣaḥ stūyate sā na kiṃ janaiḥ

the undoing of enemies and the highest liberation. Why then is she not praised by people?

verse 15

Caṇḍikāṃ hṛdayenāpi yaḥ smaret satataṃ naraḥ |

The person who constantly remembers Chandika, even only in the heart,

Hṛdyaṃ kāmamavāpnoti hṛdi devī sadā vaset

obtains the desire dearest to his heart, and the Devi dwells in his heart forever.

verse 16

Agrato'muṃ mahādevakṛtaṃ kīlakavāraṇam |

Placing first this removal of the pin, made by Mahadeva,

Niṣkīlañca tathā kṛtvā paṭhitavyaṃ samāhitaiḥ

and having thus rendered it unpinned, it should be recited by those of collected mind.
