अयि गिरिनन्दिनि नन्दितमेदिनि विश्वविनोदिनि नन्दिनुते गिरिवरविन्ध्यशिरोऽधिनिवासिनि विष्णुविलासिनि जिष्णुनुते।
Ayi giri-nandini nandita-medini viśva-vinodini nandi-nute girivar-vindhya-śiro'dhi-nivāsinī viṣṇu-vilāsinī jiṣṇu-nute
O daughter of the mountain, who delights the earth, who brings joy to the universe, praised by Nandi (Shiva's bull); who dwells atop the great Vindhya mountain, who sports with Vishnu, praised by Indra (Jishnu),
भगवति हे शितिकण्ठकुटुम्बिनि भूरिकुटुम्बिनि भूरिकृते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥1॥
Bhagavati he śiti-kaṇṭha-kuṭumbini bhūri-kuṭumbini bhūri-kṛte jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute
O goddess, consort of the blue-throated one (Shiva), mistress of a vast family (of the universe), doer of great deeds -- victory, victory to you, O destroyer of the buffalo-demon Mahisha, of lovely braided hair, daughter of the mountain.

सुरवरवर्षिणि दुर्धरधर्षिणि दुर्मुखमर्षिणि हर्षरते त्रिभुवनपोषिणि शङ्करतोषिणि किल्बिषमोषिणि घोषरते।
Sura-vara-varṣiṇī durdha-radharṣiṇī durmukha-marṣiṇī harṣa-rate tribhuvana-poṣiṇī śaṃkara-toṣiṇī kilbiṣa-moṣiṇī ghoṣa-rate
O showerer of boons upon the best of gods, subduer of the unassailable demons, tolerant even of the vile-faced, delighting in joy; nourisher of the three worlds, gladdener of Shankara (Shiva), remover of sin, delighting in tumult (of battle),
दनुजनिरोषिणि दितिसुतरोषिणि दुर्मदशोषिणि सिन्धुसुते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥2॥
Danuja-niroṣiṇī diti-suta-roṣiṇī durmada-śoṣiṇī sindhu-sute jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute
Wrathful toward the demon sons (Danavas), wrathful toward the sons of Diti, who dries up the arrogance of the wicked, O daughter of the ocean -- victory, victory to you, O destroyer of the buffalo-demon Mahisha, of lovely braided hair, daughter of the mountain.

अयि जगदम्ब मदम्ब कदम्ब वनप्रियवासिनि हासरते शिखरि शिरोमणि तुङ्गहिमलय शृङ्गनिजालय मध्यगते।
Ayi jagadamba madamba kadamba-vana-priya-vāsinī hāsa-rate śikhari-śiromaṇi tuṅga-himalaya śṛṅga-nijālaya madhyagate
O mother of the universe, my mother, who loves to dwell in the kadamba forest, delighting in laughter; O crest-jewel of mountains, dwelling amidst your own abode on the lofty peak of the Himalaya,
मधुमधुरे मधुकैटभगञ्जिनि कैटभभञ्जिनि रासरते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥3॥
Madhu-madhure madhu-kaiṭabha-gañjini kaiṭabha-bhañjini rāsa-rate jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute
sweeter than honey, conqueror of the demons Madhu and Kaitabha, destroyer of Kaitabha, delighting in the rasa dance -- victory, victory to you, O destroyer of the buffalo-demon Mahisha, of lovely braided hair, daughter of the mountain.
verse 4
अयि शतखण्ड विखण्डितरुण्ड वितुण्डितशुण्ड गजाधिपते रिपुगजगण्ड विदारणचण्ड पराक्रमशुण्ड मृगाधिपते।
Ayi śata-khaṇḍa vikhaṇḍita-ruṇḍa vituṇḍita-śuṇḍa gajādhipate ripu-gaja-gaṇḍa vidāraṇa-caṇḍa parākrama-śuṇḍa mṛgādhipate
O you before whom the lord of elephants, his head shattered into a hundred pieces, his trunk torn asunder, falls; O fierce one whose mighty trunk-like arm tears open the cheeks of the enemy's elephants, sovereign among lions,
निजभुजदण्ड निपातितखण्ड विपातितमुण्ड भटाधिपते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥4॥
Nijabhuja-daṇḍa nipātita-khaṇḍa vipātita-muṇḍa bhaṭādhipate jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute
by the mere staff of your own arm you fell them in pieces, felling the heads of the chief warriors -- victory, victory to you, O destroyer of the buffalo-demon Mahisha, of lovely braided hair, daughter of the mountain.

अयि रणदुर्मद शत्रुवधोदित दुर्धरनिर्जर शक्तिभृते चतुरविचार धुरीणमहाशिव दूतकृत प्रमथाधिपते।
Ayi raṇa-durmada śatru-vadhodita durdha-ranirjara śakti-bhṛte catura-vicāra dhurīṇa-mahāśiva dūta-kṛta pramathādhipate
O bearer of unbearable, undying power, arisen to slay the enemy maddened in battle; who made the great Shiva himself, foremost in wise counsel, your own messenger, O sovereign of the ghostly hosts (Pramathas),
दुरितदुरीह दुराशयदुर्मति दानवदुत कृतान्तमते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥5॥
Durita-durīha durāśaya-durmati dānava-duta kṛtānta-mate jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute
you whose intent is death itself for the demon-messenger of evil deeds, evil desire, and evil mind -- victory, victory to you, O destroyer of the buffalo-demon Mahisha, of lovely braided hair, daughter of the mountain.
verse 6
अयि शरणागत वैरिवधुवर वीरवराभय दायकरे त्रिभुवनमस्तक शुलविरोधि शिरोऽधिकृतामल शुलकरे।
Ayi śaraṇāgata vairi-vadhu-vara vīra-varābhaya dāya-kare tribhuvana-mastaka śūla-virodhi śiro'dhikṛtāmala śūla-kare
O granter of fearlessness to the noblest heroes and even to the wives of your fallen foes who take refuge in you; who plants your pure spear upon the head of the one who defied the trident held over the three worlds,
दुमिदुमितामर धुन्दुभिनादमहोमुखरीकृत दिङ्मकरे जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥6॥
Dumidumitāmara dhundubhi-nādamaho-mukharīkṛta diṅmakare jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute
at whose deep drum-beats -- dumi-dumi -- sounding forth, the crocodile-bannered directions themselves resound -- victory, victory to you, O destroyer of the buffalo-demon Mahisha, of lovely braided hair, daughter of the mountain.
verse 7
अयि निजहुङ्कृति मात्रनिराकृत धूम्रविलोचन धूम्रशते समरविशोषित शोणितबीज समुद्भवशोणित बीजलते।
Ayi nija-huṅkṛti mātra-nirākṛta dhūmra-vilocana dhūmra-śate samara-viśoṣita śoṇita-bīja samudbhava-śoṇita bīja-late
O you who, by your mere battle-cry of 'hum,' destroyed the smoke-eyed demon Dhumralochana along with his hundredfold hordes; who dried up in battle the blood of Raktabija, from whose every drop of blood sprang forth new demons,
शिवशिवशुम्भ निशुम्भमहाहव तर्पितभूत पिशाचरते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥7॥
Śiva-śiva-śumbha niśumbha-mahāhava tarpita-bhūta piśāca-rate jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute
who in the great battle with Shumbha and Nishumbha (crying 'Shiva Shiva') satisfied the hosts of ghosts and demons, delighting in that fierce war -- victory, victory to you, O destroyer of the buffalo-demon Mahisha, of lovely braided hair, daughter of the mountain.

धनुरनुषङ्ग रणक्षणसङ्ग परिस्फुरदङ्ग नटत्कटके कनकपिशङ्ग पृषत्कनिषङ्ग रसद्भटशृङ्ग हताबटुके।
Dhanur-anuṣaṅga raṇa-kṣaṇa-saṅga parisphurad-aṅga naṭat-kaṭake kanaka-piśaṅga pṛṣatka-niṣaṅga rasad-bhaṭa-śṛṅga hatā-baṭuke
O you whose limbs, adorned with clinking anklets, quiver as you draw the bow in the moment of battle; whose golden-tawny quiver of arrows sounds forth, striking down the young demon-warriors who roar their battle-cries,
कृतचतुरङ्ग बलक्षितिरङ्ग घटद्बहुरङ्ग रटद्बटुके जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥8॥
Kṛta-caturaṅga bala-kṣiti-raṅga ghaṭad-bahuTaṅga raṭad-baṭuke jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute
who made the battlefield a stage crowded with the fourfold army, resounding with many colors and cries of young combatants -- victory, victory to you, O destroyer of the buffalo-demon Mahisha, of lovely braided hair, daughter of the mountain.

सुरललना ततथेयि तथेयि कृताभिनयोदर नृत्यरते कृत कुकुथः कुकुथो गडदादिकताल कुतूहल गानरते।
Sura-lalanā tatatheyī tatatheyī kṛtābhinayodara nṛtya-rate kṛta kukuthaḥ kukutho gaḍadādika-tāla kutūhala gāna-rate
O you who delight in the dance performed with expressive gestures to the rhythmic syllables 'tatatheyi, tatatheyi' sung by the celestial women, delighting in the eager song set to the beat of 'kukuthah, kukutho, gadada' (rhythmic drum-syllables, not literal words),
धुधुकुट धुक्कुट धिंधिमित ध्वनि धीर मृदंग निनादरते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥9॥
Dhudhu-kuṭa dhuk-kuṭa dhiṃdhimita dhvani dhīra mṛdaṃga nināda-rate jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute
delighting in the deep resonant sound of the mridangam drum echoing 'dhu-dhu-kuta, dhuk-kuta, dhim-dhimita' -- victory, victory to you, O destroyer of the buffalo-demon Mahisha, of lovely braided hair, daughter of the mountain.

जय जय जप्य जयेजयशब्द परस्तुति तत्परविश्वनुते झणझणझिञ्झिमि झिङ्कृत नूपुरशिञ्जितमोहित भूतपते।
Jaya jaya japya jayejaya-śabda para-stuti tatpara-viśva-nute jhaṇajhaṇa-jhiñjhimi jhinJakṛta nūpura-śiñjita-mohita bhūtapate
O you who are praised by the whole universe intent upon uttering the cry 'Jaya jaya' to be chanted in your honor, the highest praise; whose anklets' tinkling sound of 'jhana-jhana-jhinjhimi' enchants even the lord of ghosts (Shiva),
नटित नटार्ध नटी नट नायक नाटितनाट्य सुगानरते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥10॥
Naṭita naṭārdha naṭī naṭa nāyaka nāṭita-nāṭya sugāna-rate jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute
who delights in the fine song and dance enacted by the dancer and her leading man, half-dancer himself -- victory, victory to you, O destroyer of the buffalo-demon Mahisha, of lovely braided hair, daughter of the mountain.
verse 11
अयि सुमनःसुमनःसुमनः सुमनःसुमनोहरकान्तियुते श्रितरजनी रजनीरजनी रजनीरजनी करवक्त्रवृते।
Ayi sumanaḥ-sumanaḥ-sumanaḥ sumanaḥ-sumano-hara-kāntiyute śrita-rajanī rajanī-rajanī rajanī-rajanī kara-vaktra-vṛte
O you of a countenance whose loveliness surpasses even the most fragrant and virtuous of flowers and minds, again and again; your face like the moon that eclipses night after night, the moon itself finding shelter in you,
सुनयनविभ्रमर भ्रमरभ्रमर भ्रमरभ्रमराधिपते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥11॥
Sunayanavibrhmara bhramara-bhramara bhramara-bhramarādhipate jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute
whose lovely, roving eyes are themselves the sovereign among all the swarming bees -- victory, victory to you, O destroyer of the buffalo-demon Mahisha, of lovely braided hair, daughter of the mountain.

सहितमहाहव मल्लमतल्लिक मल्लितरल्लक मल्लरते विरचितवल्लिक पल्लिकमल्लिक झिल्लिकभिल्लिक वर्गवृते।
Sahita-mahāhava malla-matallika mallita-rallaka malla-rate viracita-vallika pallika-mallika jhillika-bhillika varga-vṛte
O you who, in the great battle, are surrounded by the foremost of wrestlers, garlanded with victory in combat; encircled by hosts of hunters and forest-folk amid jasmine-covered bowers and the chirping of crickets,
शितकृतफुल्ल समुल्लसितारुण तल्लजपल्लव सल्ललिते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥12॥
Śita-kṛta-phulla samullasitāruṇa tallaja-pallava sallalite jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute
delighting amid the freshly-blossomed, radiant reddish young shoots of forest creepers -- victory, victory to you, O destroyer of the buffalo-demon Mahisha, of lovely braided hair, daughter of the mountain.

अविरलगण्ड गलन्मदमेदुर मत्तमतङ्ग जराजपते त्रिभुवनभुषण भूतकलानिधि रूपपयोनिधि राजसुते।
Avirala-gaṇḍa galan-mada-medura matta-mataṅga jarāja-pate tribhuvana-bhuṣaṇa bhūta-kalānidhi rūpa-payonidhi rāja-sute
O sovereign among the mighty, rutting elephants whose temples ceaselessly stream with musth; ornament of the three worlds, treasury of every art there ever was, ocean of beauty, O royal daughter,
अयि सुदतीजन लालसमानस मोहन मन्मथराजसुते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥13॥
Ayi sudatī-jana lālasa-mānasa mohana manmatha-rāja-sute jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute
who enchants the yearning hearts of beautiful-toothed women (fair maidens), yourself the very princess surpassing even Manmatha, the god of love -- victory, victory to you, O destroyer of the buffalo-demon Mahisha, of lovely braided hair, daughter of the mountain.

कमलदलामल कोमलकान्ति कलाकलितामल भाललते सकलविलास कलानिलयक्रम केलिचलत्कल हंसकुले।
Kamala-dalāmala komala-kānti kalā-kalitāmala bhāla-late sakala-vilāsa kalā-nilaya-krama keli-calat-kala haṃsa-kule
O you whose forehead, spotless as a lotus petal, is gentle and lovely, adorned with the mark of the crescent moon; the very abode of every graceful art, amid whose playful gait even the swans move in graceful rhythm,
अलिकुलसङ्कुल कुवलयमण्डल मौलिमिलद्बकुलालिकुले जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥14॥
Alikula-saṃkula kuvalaya-maṇḍala mauli-milad-bakulālikule jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute
whose braid, dense as a swarm of bees, is crowned with bakula blossoms encircled by a ring of dark lotuses -- victory, victory to you, O destroyer of the buffalo-demon Mahisha, of lovely braided hair, daughter of the mountain.
verse 15
करमुरलीरव वीजितकूजित लज्जितकोकिल मञ्जुमते मिलितपुलिन्द मनोहरगुञ्जित रञ्जितशैल निकुञ्जगते।
Kara-muralī-rava vījita-kūjita lajjita-kokila mañju-mate milita-pulinda manohara-guñjita rañjita-śaila nikuñja-gate
O sweet-voiced one, before whose flute-like call even the cuckoo falls silent in shame; who dwells delighting amid the mountain groves, echoing with the charming hum of gathered forest-tribes (Pulindas),
निजगणभूत महाशबरीगण सद्गुणसम्भृत केलितले जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥15॥
Nija-gaṇa-bhūta mahā-śabarī-gaṇa sad-guṇa-sambhṛta keli-tale jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute
who sports amid the great tribes of Shabari huntresses, your own attendant hosts, endowed with true virtue -- victory, victory to you, O destroyer of the buffalo-demon Mahisha, of lovely braided hair, daughter of the mountain.

कटितटपीत दुकूलविचित्र मयुखतिरस्कृत चन्द्ररुचे प्रणतसुरासुर मौलिमणिस्फुर दंशुलसन्नख चन्द्ररुचे।
Kaṭi-taṭa-pīta dukūla-vicitra mayukha-tiraskṛta candra-ruce praṇata-surāsura mauli-maṇi-sphura daṃśulasan-nakha candra-ruce
O you whose yellow silken garment at the hip, richly patterned, outshines even the rays of the moon in its splendor; whose radiant, moon-like nails gleam, touched by the crest-jewels of the gods and demons who bow before you,
जितकनकाचल मौलिमदोर्जित निर्भरकुञ्जर कुम्भकुचे जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥16॥
Jita-kanakācala mauli-mador-jita nirbhara-kuñjara kumbha-kuce jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute
whose full, firm breasts, like the frontal lobes of a mighty elephant in rut, surpass in splendor even the golden mountain Meru's peak -- victory, victory to you, O destroyer of the buffalo-demon Mahisha, of lovely braided hair, daughter of the mountain.
verse 17
विजितसहस्रकरैक सहस्रकरैक सहस्रकरैकनुते कृतसुरतारक सङ्गरतारक सङ्गरतारक सूनुसुते।
Vijita-sahasra-karaikaṃ sahasra-karaikaṃ sahasra-karaikānute kṛta-sura-tāraka saṅgara-tāraka saṅgara-tāraka sūnu-sute
O you who are praised even by the thousand-armed one (Vishnu/Indra), yourself surpassing a thousand thousand-armed ones; through whom the son (Kartikeya) was brought forth in battle to be the deliverer of the gods, the deliverer in war,
सुरथसमाधि समानसमाधि समाधिसमाधि सुजातरते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥17॥
Suratha-samādhi samāna-samādhi samādhi-samādhi sujāta-rate jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute
who delighted in granting to King Suratha, absorbed in meditation, a meditation equal to (or surpassing) all other meditations, the noblest state of communion -- victory, victory to you, O destroyer of the buffalo-demon Mahisha, of lovely braided hair, daughter of the mountain.
verse 18
पदकमलं करुणानिलये वरिवस्यति योऽनुदिनं सुशिवे अयि कमले कमलानिलये कमलानिलयः स कथं न भवेत्।
Pada-kamalaṃ karuṇā-nilaye varivasyati yo'nudinaṃ śuśive ayi kamale kamalā-nilaye kamalā-nilayaḥ sa kathaṃ na bhavet
O abode of compassion, O auspicious one: he who daily worships your lotus feet, O Kamala, dweller in the lotus, how could he fail to become himself an abode of lotus-like prosperity?
तव पदमेव परम्पदमित्यनुशीलयतो मम किं न शिवे जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥18॥
Tava padameva param-padam-ity-anuśīlayato mama kiṃ na śive jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute
O auspicious one, to me who constantly meditates that your very feet are the supreme goal, what is there that could not be granted? -- victory, victory to you, O destroyer of the buffalo-demon Mahisha, of lovely braided hair, daughter of the mountain.
verse 19
कनकलसत्कलसिन्धुजलैरनुषिञ्चति तेगुणरङ्गभुवम् भजति स किं न शचीकुचकुम्भतटीपरिरम्भसुखानुभवम्।
Kanaka-lasat-kala-sindhu-jalair-anuṣiñcati te-guṇa-raṅga-bhuvam bhajati sa kiṃ na śacī-kuca-kumbha-taṭī-parirambha-sukhānubhavam
He who daily bathes the stage of your virtues with the shining waters of the golden ocean, through devoted praise -- does he not also come to enjoy the very bliss of embracing the full breasts of Shachi, Indra's queen (that is, attain the joys of heaven)?
तव चरणं शरणं करवाणि नतामरवाणि निवासि शिवम् जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥19॥
Tava caraṇaṃ śaraṇaṃ karavāṇi natāmara-vāṇi nivāsi śivam jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute
May I take your feet as my refuge, O you to whom the speech of the bowing gods belongs, O auspicious dweller -- victory, victory to you, O destroyer of the buffalo-demon Mahisha, of lovely braided hair, daughter of the mountain.
verse 20
तव विमलेन्दुकुलं वदनेन्दुमलं सकलं ननु कूलयते किमु पुरुहूतपुरीन्दु मुखी सुमुखीभिरसौ विमुखीक्रियते।
Tava vimala-indu-kulaṃ vadana-indu-malaṃ sakalaṃ nanu kūlayate kimu puruhūta-purī-indu mukhī sumukhibhir-asau vimukhī-kriyate
Does not your spotless, moon-like face put to shame the moon itself along with its dark blemish entirely? Would the moon-faced women of Indra's city (apsaras) then turn away, humbled, from even their own loveliness before you?
मम तु मतं शिवनामधने भवती कृपया किमुत क्रियते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥20॥
Mama tu mataṃ śiva-nāma-dhane bhavatī kṛpayā kimuta kriyate jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute
But this alone is my conviction, O treasure named after Shiva: what indeed can your grace not accomplish? -- victory, victory to you, O destroyer of the buffalo-demon Mahisha, of lovely braided hair, daughter of the mountain.
verse 21
अयि मयि दीन दयालुतया कृपयैव त्वया भवितव्यमुमे अयि जगतो जननी कृपयासि यथासि तथानुमितासिरते।
Ayi mayi dīna dayālutayā kṛpayaiva tvayā bhavitavyam-ume ayi jagato jananī kṛpayāsi yathāsi tathānumitāsī-rate
O Uma, toward me, so wretched, only through compassion born of your kindness can you truly be moved; O mother of the universe, exactly as you are known through your own grace, so may your compassion be proven toward this devotee,
यदुचितमत्र भवत्युररीकुरुतादुरुतापमपाकुरुते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥21॥
Yaducitam-atra bhavatyur-arī-kurutā-durutāpam-apā-kurute jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute
