Shivashtakam (Prabhum Prananatham)

verse 1

प्रभुं प्राणनाथं विभुं विश्वनाथं

Prabhuṃ prāṇanāthaṃ vibhuṃ viśvanāthaṃ

The Master, the Lord of the life-breath, the all-pervading One, the Lord of the universe,

जगन्नाथनाथं सदानन्दभाजम् ।

Jagannāthanāthaṃ sadānandabhājam |

Lord even of the Lord of the world, He who abides in unending bliss,

भवद्भव्यभूतेश्वरं भूतनाथं

Bhavadbhavyabhūteśvaraṃ bhūtanāthaṃ

Lord of all beings that are and are yet to be, Master of every creature,

शिवं शङ्करं शम्भुमीशानमीडे ॥ १॥

Śivaṃ śaṅkaraṃ śambhum īśānam īḍe ||1||

I praise Him: Shiva, Shankara, Shambhu, Ishana.

verse 2

गले रुण्डमालं तनौ सर्पजालं

Gale ruṇḍamālaṃ tanau sarpajālaṃ

On His neck a garland of skulls, on His body a mesh of serpents,

महाकालकालं गणेशाधिपालम् ।

Mahākālakālaṃ gaṇeśādhipālam |

Death to great Death itself, sovereign protector of Ganesha and the ganas,

जटाजूटगङ्गोत्तरङ्गैर्विशालं

Jaṭājūṭagaṅgottaraṅgair viśālaṃ

made vast by the surging waves of Ganga in His matted locks,

शिवं शङ्करं शम्भुमीशानमीडे ॥ २॥

Śivaṃ śaṅkaraṃ śambhum īśānam īḍe ||2||

I praise Him: Shiva, Shankara, Shambhu, Ishana.

verse 3

मुदामाकरं मण्डनं मण्डयन्तं

Mudāmākaraṃ maṇḍanaṃ maṇḍayantaṃ

a mine of joy, the adornment that adorns every adornment,

महामण्डलं भस्मभूषाधरं तम् ।

Mahāmaṇḍalaṃ bhasmabhūṣādharaṃ tam |

the vast encompassing orb, Him who wears sacred ash as His ornament,

अनादिं ह्यपारं महामोहहारं

Anādiṃ hyapāraṃ mahāmohaharam

beginningless, boundless, the remover of great delusion,

शिवं शङ्करं शम्भुमीशानमीडे ॥ ३॥

Śivaṃ śaṅkaraṃ śambhum īśānam īḍe ||3||

I praise Him: Shiva, Shankara, Shambhu, Ishana.

verse 4

वटाधोनिवासं महाट्टाट्टहासं

Vaṭādhonivāsaṃ mahāṭṭāṭṭahāsaṃ

dwelling beneath the banyan tree, whose mighty laughter peals out,

महापापनाशं सदा सुप्रकाशम् ।

Mahāpāpanāśaṃ sadā suprakāśam |

the destroyer of the gravest sins, ever shining bright,

गिरीशं गणेशं सुरेशं महेशं

Girīśaṃ gaṇeśaṃ sureśaṃ maheśaṃ

Lord of the mountains, Lord of the ganas, Lord of the gods, the Great Lord,

शिवं शङ्करं शम्भुमीशानमीडे ॥ ४॥

Śivaṃ śaṅkaraṃ śambhum īśānam īḍe ||4||

I praise Him: Shiva, Shankara, Shambhu, Ishana.

verse 5

गिरीन्द्रात्मजासङ्गृहीतार्धदेहं

Girīndrātmajāsaṅgṛhītārdhadehaṃ

half of whose body is taken up by the daughter of the mountain king,

गिरौ संस्थितं सर्वदा सन्नगेहम् ।

Girau saṃsthitaṃ sarvadā sannageham |

seated upon the mountain, whose dwelling is settled there for all time,

परब्रह्म ब्रह्मादिभिर्वन्द्यमानं

Parabrahma brahmādibhir vandyamānaṃ

the supreme Brahman, worshipped by Brahma and the other gods,

शिवं शङ्करं शम्भुमीशानमीडे ॥ ५॥

Śivaṃ śaṅkaraṃ śambhum īśānam īḍe ||5||

I praise Him: Shiva, Shankara, Shambhu, Ishana.

verse 6

कपालं त्रिशूलं कराभ्यां दधानं

Kapālaṃ triśūlaṃ karābhyāṃ dadhānaṃ

bearing the skull and the trident in His two hands,

पदाम्भोजनम्राय कामं ददानम् ।

Padāmbhojanamrāya kāmaṃ dadānam |

granting every wish to whoever bows at His lotus feet,

बलीवर्दयानं सुराणां प्रधानं

Balīvardayānaṃ surāṇāṃ pradhānaṃ

whose mount is the bull, foremost among the gods,

शिवं शङ्करं शम्भुमीशानमीडे ॥ ६॥

Śivaṃ śaṅkaraṃ śambhum īśānam īḍe ||6||

I praise Him: Shiva, Shankara, Shambhu, Ishana.

verse 7

शरच्चन्द्रगात्रं गुणानन्दपात्रं

Śaraccandragātraṃ guṇānandapātraṃ

whose form is the autumn moon, the vessel of the bliss of all noble qualities,

त्रिनेत्रं पवित्रं धनेशस्य मित्रम् ।

Trinetraṃ pavitraṃ dhaneśasya mitram |

three-eyed, utterly pure, the friend of Kubera the lord of wealth,

अपर्णाकलत्रं चरित्रं विचित्रं

Aparṇākalatraṃ caritraṃ vicitraṃ

whose consort is Aparna, whose deeds are wondrous,

शिवं शङ्करं शम्भुमीशानमीडे ॥ ७॥

Śivaṃ śaṅkaraṃ śambhum īśānam īḍe ||7||

I praise Him: Shiva, Shankara, Shambhu, Ishana.

verse 8

हरं सर्पहारं चिताभूविहारं

Haraṃ sarpahāraṃ citābhūvihāraṃ

Hara, who wears serpents as a garland, who roams the cremation ground,

भवं वेदसारं सदा निर्विकारम् ।

Bhavaṃ vedasāraṃ sadā nirvikāram |

Bhava, the very essence of the Vedas, forever free of change,

श्मशाने वसन्तं मनोजं दहन्तं

Śmaśāne vasantaṃ manojaṃ dahantaṃ

dwelling in the burning ground, who burned Manoja, the god of desire,

शिवं शङ्करं शम्भुमीशानमीडे ॥ ८॥

Śivaṃ śaṅkaraṃ śambhum īśānam īḍe ||8||

I praise Him: Shiva, Shankara, Shambhu, Ishana.

phalashruti

स्तवं यः प्रभाते नरः शूलपाणे

Stavaṃ yaḥ prabhāte naraḥ śūlapāṇe

O Shulapani, the one who at dawn takes up this hymn of praise,

पठेत् सर्वदा भर्गभावानुरक्तः ।

Paṭhet sarvadā bhargabhāvānuraktaḥ |

and recites it every day, his heart set on Bharga, the effulgent One,

स पुत्रं धनं धान्यमित्रं कलत्रं

Sa putraṃ dhanaṃ dhānyamitraṃ kalatraṃ

sons, wealth, grain, friends and a wife —

विचित्रं समासाद्य मोक्षं प्रयाति ॥ ९॥

Vicitraṃ samāsādya mokṣaṃ prayāti ||9||

having obtained all this in its variety, he goes on to liberation.
